Philippians: The Pursuit of Joy - Part 1

Which would you choose? Option A - A comfortable life that goes according to all of your plans. or Option B - A deep sense of contentment and joy in life.   In part one of our series, we see from the apostle Paul's letter to the Philippians that Option A doesn't necessarily lead to option B... In fact, there are times when these two options are at odd with one another.  We seek joy, but true and lasting join is found only through seeing and savoring Jesus Christ.

Here's the video that was played at the beginning of the message...

A biologist once told a story about his Harvard professor named Louis Agassiz, who taught him a simple habit to help him see more than he ever dreamed. The lesson he learned is also the secret to lifelong and life-changing Bible reading: keep looking. One reason we see so little when we read the Bible is that we do not give ourselves long enough to look. John Piper shares the story “Agassiz and the Fish” in his new book Reading the Bible Supernaturally. In the seemingly ordinary act of reading the Bible, something miraculous happens: God gives us new eyes to see more of him — if we are willing to slow down and keep looking. Gospel-Centered Money and Generosity

Jesus talks about money more than any other topic. The question is, why? Jesus doesn't need our money, he's pursuing our hearts.  Jesus knows that there is a connection between our wallets and our hearts (Luke 12:34).  Jesus wants to free us from the grip of greed and fear, in order for us to live lives of joy and generosity.

Luke 12:11-34

Gospel-Centered Multiplication

As people saved by, and shaped by the gospel, we are then sent by gospel.  Jesus has given us the Holy Spirit to empower us as witnesses. We need to embrace a missionary mindset as we engage a dark world with the light of the gospel.

Here's the book Pastor Mark mentioned at the beginning of the message:
